I'm grumpy today...I ran a fever of 102 yesterday and generally felt like a zombie...thought I was coming down the with flu, but went to take a shower and discovered that I had a golf-ball sized plugged duct in my right breast. Anyone that has had a badly plugged duct knows how much "fun" it is to try and massage those suckers out.

Took me about forty minutes under the hot water to get it worked loose and even still, my fever didn't break until this morning. Emmitt apparently wanted in on the "let's make mom miserable" game as he woke up once an hour last night to eat instead of once every two hours. (Or the optimist side of me says he was just trying to help work that milk loose...)

So anyway, woke up this morning to yet another handful of anonymous blog comments from what I can only assume is the same person that swings by on a regular basis to lambast me for having the gall to "accept" formula ads on this site. Their second comment today even accused me of allowing the formula companies to write the post about little Dominic so that my readers would find it SOOO heart-warming that they'd immediately stop breastfeeding and switch to formula. Uh-huh.

With that in mind, I want to explain one more time how these ads work.

I put a lot of time and effort into this blog. That time and effort takes away from my "real" job which belive me, pays MUCH, MUCH more than this one does. I do this blog as a labor of love and as a way to help spread the word about breastfeeding and milk banking. I don't do it to make money, but it is nice to make enough money to pay hosting bills for email accounts and such.

So, I run CafePress Ads (since I have a shop there) and I run Google AdSense ads. The Google ads deliver based on the content of the page. Thus, if I make a post that mentions formula, Google tries to match up ads from formula companies. I don't often post about formula, so you don't often see those ads. I DID post about forumla in the Dominic thread, so one snuck in.

Now, Google allows me to block these ads, but only by having me type in the URL of the site that I want to block. So...when I see an ad, I can go block THAT ad, but I can't keep a new ad from showing up down the road. Basically it's an ongoing cat and mouse game.

Since the ads often chance on a daily or even hourly basis, it's possible for someone to see an ad that I never see. So, if the anonymous poster actually wants to help, instead of pointing fingers and making accusations, they could actually post a comment or send me an email and give me the URL of the company in the ad they see. Then I can go and put a manual block on that ad.

To note, I put Enfamil on the blocked list this morning, but the ad is still showing up. It takes about 24 hours for the system to update...so don't go sending me any nastygrams about the Enfamil ad.

    :-P

Sorry about the plugged ducts and the comments. For what it is worth -- a formula ad here or there that you cannot control in no way diminishes all of the good your work on this blog does!

I've had exactly the same problem, both with the Google ads and with the comments. Don't waste your time and energy worrying about what one anonymous poster thinks. What you are doing on daily basis is fabulous and people like you get the real breastfeeding message across.
Sometimes, when it happens to me I'd like to respond by enquiring what the critics are doing to promote breastfeeding.(ie Remind me what your website/blog is called so I can check it out.) But in reality I think the best thing to do is ignore people who only have time to criticise your efforts rather than praise your hard work. By the way I hope you feel better soon. I feel so sorry for you having Mastitis. I've had it many times myself...

About the plugged duct- point Emmit' nose in direction of plugged duct when he nurses- you may have to swing him around in weird angles, doing this will help clear the duct. I am bit concerned about the fever. Sounds like you are doing all the right things with the heat/hot water. I used a "hot pack" that you could put in microwave and placed on duct.
Could it be your bra? That is often the culprit..
The hot shower works great- if there is way to direct spay onto the duct without beging too painful will do wonders.
Do you have access to hot tub? This also is good. Sorry you are having a rough time :(

I had used the "point his nose" trick on a plugged duct last week, but that one was at about 11 oclock, so easy enough.

This one was at 7 oclock...that makes it a bit tougher, unless either he or I learns how to do a headstand. ;) I do know that I can use the pump to get it out if I have to though, I did that the last go-round. (pump while HEAVILY massaging from the plugged duct to the nipple).

The fever has gone down now. Had me worried briefly as I had a bout with Mastitis the last time and I really did not want it again. The duct seems to be cleared now though, so I think I'm ok.

I do think the bra played a role...I've been having SUPER strong letdown lately, sometimes even when I'm not nursing...so I'd slept in my nursing bra a few nights with nursing pads to avoid soaking the bed.

I need to get a good soft-cup or sports bra for night sleeping when that happens...only bras I have now are underwire which I REFUSE to give up. ;) At least for during the day. (Never had a problem in the 14 months I pumped for Nora...so I think it's the "night usage" that got me...)

Until he perfects his handstand, try laying him on a bed and leaning over him to nurse... yes upside down if you have to, but it works!

AdSense. Sigh. I have several sites with the same problem... I block the Enfamil urls but somehow they keep sneaking in!! Ugh.

And I also get the occasional clueless commenter too. ;)

Hmm, hadn't thought of leaning over him.

He might not know how to eat without 5 pounds of warm mommy breast laying on him. LOL...

I hear you on the underwire love - but they're so bad for nursing boobs. Hope you that duct clear soon. As for the nastygrams... Jesus. Who has the time to be nasty to a mom of a teeny newborn? Oy.

I tried the leaning over thing once and felt BIZARRE very much like a cow. You might try draping him over you...
A bra I would recommend- I am similarly endowed- is Decent Exposures, http://www.decentexposures.com/ bras. They are very similar to sports bra. Don't get the nursing bra- just regular. Hate to say it Jen- but an underwire is the WORST for lactating breasts. You might also like Bravado Bras, http://www.bravadodesigns.com/, they are quite funky and very comfortable. I loved them but had to stop wearing them when they put latex in their bands.
Goof Luck- and dare I say it- keep us abreast!

I did the leaning over thing under similar circumstances, and it did work well, thought felt extremely odd and was rather tiring. Hopefully all sorted by now.

Ignore anonymous posters - anyone who can't be bothered to sign their name to their thoughts really isn't worth the effort.
